Teaching a Love of Learning

1 June 2020

Education doesn't end when someone leaves school; just because they get a diploma doesn't mean they're done learning. Instead, education is a constant and ongoing process, and it's vital that the process gets started as early as possible. By educating children as soon as possible, they're more likely to develop a love of learning.

Children will grow up to constantly associate learning with positive aspects of their lives. They'll grow up knowing that there's always more to learn about the world, regardless of whether it's in books, math equations, or other people. And those early developmental stages are when a child first gets an inkling of who they may be.

A love of learning will help guide a person throughout their life, in more aspects than just their career. If someone actively enjoys learning about the world around them, they'll live a happier and more fulfilling life. What else could any parent want for their children?

Keep reading below to learn more about how to instill a love of learning in children!

The Most Important Skill

Few children naturally enjoy learning, and for a simple reason: it's boring. Learning is fundamentally about meditating on information and connecting dots about it. It takes brainpower, and some children naturally get more enjoyment out of playing around and engaging their minds with other activities.

Instead, some children need to learn how to love learning — that's what adults need to teach kids first. Once a child learns how to love learning, they'll basically be a sponge for information about anything. If an adult manages to show a child how to love learning, they'll be able to use that skill for the rest of their lives.

Employers Enjoy Growth and Change, Not Just Talent

Employers don't just want to find people with talents and skills to do jobs. They also want to find people with vision and who are eager to learn more about their industries and the company. Technical skills are just a foot in the door for most employers — the character of a person matters more.

By teaching children to love learning, they will become more industrious, interesting, and unique people. They'll become more employable and find more success.

Associate Education With Interests

The best way to instill a love of learning in children is to associate it with their interests. If a child is interested in video games, then teachers should talk with them about why they like playing them. The teacher should make the student's interests their own, and then find something worth discovering within it.

The best teachers help guide students to the realization that there's always more to the things they love. Over time, they'll develop more interests, and will be ready to enrich themselves with knowledge about them.

Connect With Children As More Than Students

The most important step to teach children about how to love learning is to connect with them as more than just students. They're developing people, with their own experiences, ideas, and thoughts. Students aren't just students; they're also sons, daughters, friends, and sometimes even workers.

By approaching students with an appreciation for who they are, they'll listen more to what teachers have to say. They'll be more likely to love learning because they'll love the person teaching them to love.

Loving Children Helps Them Love Learning

The most important reason to instill a love of learning in children has nothing to do with knowledge or tests — it helps teach students how to love the world around them. People who love learning tend to see the beauty in the world around them, no matter what happens. Simply, they grow up to be good people.
